I’ve had some people reading this blog ask me what they can do to help the people of Manambaro. As is the case all over the developing world, sending material items like shoes just perpetuates Madagascar’s dependence on countries like the United States.
However, donating towards children’s education, particularly girls’ education, has a much greater positive impact over the long term. In broad terms, the more education a girl receives, the more control she has over when she marries and/or has children. Even if she chooses not to go to university, she is much better equipped to stand up for her rights, limit the size of her family, and provide for their education.
There may come a point when I ask for donations to fund one or more projects that I initiate here in Manambaro. At this point, the most likely project looks like it will be a new water pump in one of the crowded neighborhoods. However, I won’t be able to start any large undertaking until March at the very earliest.
If you’d rather not wait, I encourage you to donate to either of these organizations:
ONG Azafady: a British aid group that started out protecting the wildlife in the parks around Fort Dauphin, but has since expanded to begin improving health and education in the city itself.
Aide et Action (AEA): a French organization that operates all over the world to improve standards of education. One of their agents has just started a program with the mayor’s department in Manambaro, and things look promising so far.
